IMF delegation meets President

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday met the International Monetary Fund ( IMF) team in Sri Lanka in connection with formulating a funding program.

The team arrived on Monday and has been in discussions on an economic program that could be supported by an IMF lending arrangement, building on the progress made during the 9- 24 May virtual mission.

A statement from the President’s Media Office quoted the IMF delegation as saying that the multilateral lender is committed to support Sri Lanka at this difficult time, in line with the IMF’s policies. They had also updated the President on the progress of the meetings held so far including with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

President Rajapaksa had detailed the state of the economy and appreciated the IMF’s decision to extend support to strengthen the economy.

The IMF delegation included team leads Peter Breuer and Masahiro Nozaki as well as IMF Deputy Director of the Asia and Pacific Department Anne-Marie Gulde, Resident Representative Tubagus Feridhanusetyawan and Sri Lanka’s Alternative Director Dr. C. Amarasekara.

Treasury Secretary Mahinda Siriwardena, Treasury Deputy Secretary M.S.S. Saman Fernando, Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandlala Weerasinghe, Deputy Governor T.M.J.Y.P. Fernando, Economic Research Director Dr. P.K.G. Harischandra, Secretary to President Gamini Senarath and Chief of Staff Anura Dissanayake joined with the President during the discussion.
